So how is this gonna shake out?

Anyone catch the Affliction and UFC shows on Saturday night (I recorded both)? It was interesting to see a new and different promotion co. put their product out there. comparing them, it's clear to see that Affliction a) has some fine tuning to do (Megadeth, while enjoyable to a degree, was pretty clearly just awkward filler). their production values were ok. Definitely different from UFC, but not necessarily better and b) they don't have what you can call a deep talent pool. Fedor, Sylvia, Barnett and Arlovski are all top 10 heavyweights, but unless they start signing more talent really soon, they're gonna be in trouble. And that's just the heavyweight division. They've got hardly anything to fill out the other weight classes. And Dana's not gonna just let them waltz in and set up shop, as evidenced by the UFC giving away a free show with Anderson Silva moving UP a weight class and demolishing James Irvin in a little over a minute (seriously, one of the most beautiful KOs ever).
So, will Aflliction survive? I'm inclined to say not in the long term. But who knows?

Depends how deep their pockets are. The UFC is notoriously cheap, not paying their fighters shit, so if Affliction wants in, all they have to do is pay more than the UFC, and they're in.

Yes, the UFC is stingy. However, it's why they are still around. The strategy of paying good fighters above market rate has been tried by WFA, BodogFight, IFL, HDNetFights. They all were bankrolled by very wealthy people (Calvin Ayres, Mark Cuban etc.) Once they started losing millions, they either chose to stop by shutting down, or went out of business (although I guess you could say Mark Cuban's still involved, but only as far as distributing ppv via HDNet. I'm pretty sure he backed out of promoting.) Will Affliction's clothing line be able to subsidize its fight promotion? We'll see.
